'Comedy terrorist' arrested over bomb hoax

'Comedy terrorist' arrested over bomb hoax
April 9, 2005 - 10:48AM

A British comedian who gatecrashed a party at Windsor Castle two years ago was arrested on the eve of Prince Charles's wedding at the royal residence, on suspicion of making a fake bomb.
Police said they had detained a 38-year-old man on suspicion of "making a bomb hoax", but according to procedure did not give the man's name.
However, police sources and reports said the detainee was Aaron Barschak, a comedian who gatecrashed Prince William's 21st birthday party at Windsor Castle in 2003.
Barschak had prepared a fake bomb package and was preparing to deliver it to the offices of the Sun newspaper in Wapping, east London, the sources told AFP.
"He remains in custody and will be interviewed," police said, adding that he was being held at a police station in east London.
The stunt came a day before Prince Charles was due to wed his longtime companion Camilla Parker Bowles in Windsor, west of London, with a civil ceremony to be performed in the town hall and a religious blessing and party to be held at Windsor Castle.
Tabloid newspapers in Britain have staged several high-profile stunts to expose flaws in security surrounding the country's political seats and royal family, including the most recent stunt carried out by The Sun yesterday.

One of its reporters, posing as a delivery man, made it into Windsor Castle, past the multi-million pound security, with a package marked "BOMB" in his van.
The embarrassing incident - the latest in a string of blunders and misfortunes to plague the wedding planning - forced police to launch an inquiry and to discipline its negligent officers.
In June 2003, Barschak made it through security at the castle, one of the Queen's residences, and - wearing a dress, beard and sunglasses - climbed on stage as Prince William addressed the crowd and kissed him on both cheeks.
Bookies had given Barschak 50-1 odds of causing another major security breach during the wedding later today.
As preparations for the wedding of Britain's heir to the throne and Parker Bowles were under way, the comedian had reportedly been seen earlier wandering around Windsor.
