Letter of the law

Letter of the law

The 27th of October , 2005

A Turkish court has fined 20 people for using the letters Q and W on placards at a Kurdish new year celebration, under a law banning characters not used in the Turkish alphabet.
Rights campaigners said the court in the city of Siirt fined each person for holding up the placards, written in Kurdish, at the event last year, Reuters reports. Q and W do not exist in the Turkish alphabet, but are used in Kurdish.
Pressed by the European Union, Turkey lifted bans on teaching and broadcasting in Kurdish in 2002, but bureaucratic resistance has delayed implementing the reforms.
