Thieves in Austria nearly derailed a passenger train after pushing a 15-kilogram stolen safe onto the track in the hope that a speeding locomotive would smash it open, Austrian police said.
The force of the collision, near Bregenz, did open the safe, a police spokesman said, "but nearly all the money was thrown out and the perpetrators had to flee," Agence France-Presse reports.
"The locomotive was very badly damaged and there was nearly a derailment."
The safe had contained about 5000 ($8000).
